What is open source?

Before discussing the Open Source Programs, let’s understand what is Open Source.

Open-source software is code that is designed to be publicly accessible — anyone can see, modify and distribute the code.

The software is then released under an open-source license.

Many open-source projects are hosted on GitHub, where you can access repositories or get involved in community projects. Linux, Blender, and Firefox are examples of popular open-source projects.

Programs

GSoC

Google Summer of Code is a program that aims to promote open-source software development among university students. Where the students can contribute to an open-source organization for 12 weeks. First, the organizations apply to Google and after the organizations are selected then the students apply to the organizations. It is a paid program with a stipend of 1500 USD.

MLH Fellowship

Major League Hacking, is a global community for student developers. MLH fellowship is a 12-week remote program where students collaborate on Open Source projects. Here you will gain those skills that you require to be a successful engineer like writing good documentation, open-source best practices, communication, etc.

Digital Ocean Hacktoberfest

Hacktoberfest is an open-source program that is hosted by Digital Ocean. Here, you need to submit four or more quality pull requests and you’ll either get a chance to plant a tree or get a limited-edition t-shirt. This program is held in the month of October.

RGSoC

Rails Girls Summer of Code is a global fellowship program for women and non-binary coders, that enables people to contribute to some super-exciting open source projects while being paid to do so. It’s a three-month-long program (July to September).

Codeheat

Codeheat is a coding contest for FOSSASIA projects on GitHub and here the mentors are students developers, professors, or contributors who like to share and become a part of the FOSSASIA open source community. It is separated into two-month periods and after each period winners of the period are announced.
